Tilicho Lake Trek Overview

Tilicho Lake Trek is a popular trekking route in Nepal, located in the Annapurna region. The trek leads trekkers to Tilicho Lake, the highest lake in Nepal at an altitude of 4,919 meters. Tilicho Lake is a stunning turquoise colored lake which is fed by glacial meltwater from the northern faces of Annapurna and Thorong Peak. The lake is not only incredibly beautiful, but it is also an important geographic and cultural area within the Annapurna region.

The trek to Tilicho Lake is usually completed as a side trek off from the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek. Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is one of the most popular treks to do in Nepal. The Tilicho Lake trail usually allows trekkers to witness not only Tilicho Lake along the trail, but also the views of majestic peaks like Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna, and to Tilicho Peak beyond. Overall, the trek makes for a really unique offering of high-altitude lakes and alpine scenery.

The Tilicho Lake trek is well known as one of the world's famous trekking routes, not only because of its height but also because of its approachability via established trekking routes. As one of the most famous treks in Nepal, it attracts trekkers from the trekking world, those who climb the higher Himalayan treks. Although this trek does not feature the adventurous high passes such as Thorong La, it does require trekkers to properly acclimatize, along with a relatively good degree of fitness. The difficulty of the Tilicho Lake trek is rated as moderate to challenging due to the altitude and rugged terrain, especially between Khangsar and Tilicho Base Camp.

Tilicho Lake trekking starts with the drive from Kathmandu to Chame, where trekkers will stay overnight. Next, we will drive to Manang, which is a pivotal point for acclimatization. After an acclimatization day in Manang, we hike on foot to Shree Kharka, and then hike to Tilicho Base Camp. Finally, we trek to Tilicho Lake. After we explore the lake area, we will retrace our steps and descend to Khangsar or Manang, which is one of the cold deserts of Nepal. Here we will drive to Besisahar and then finally back to Kathmandu. If you’re looking for a slightly different route or pace, the Footprint Adventure team would be happy to customize the itinerary to fit your interests and travel style.

The distance of the Tilicho Lake trek from Manang to Tilicho Lake and back is approximately 35–40 kilometers and can be completed in 5 to 6 days. When combined with the full Annapurna Circuit, the trek may span 14 to 18 days.  If you are going to do a shorter version just to see Tilicho Lake, this Tilicho Lake trek itinerary is one of the shortest treks in Nepal to reach such a high altitude. If you are looking for an extensive resource for planning, this is the complete guidebook for the Tilicho Lake trek, which has all the information you need.

Major Highlights of Tilicho Lake Trek

Tilicho Lake

Located in the Manang District of Nepal's Annapurna region, Tilicho Lake is a glacial lake at an elevation of approximately 4,919 meters (16,138 ft), making it one of the highest lakes in the world. It was considered to be the highest lake in Nepal until Kayin Sara Lake was found at 5,200 m. Tilicho Lake measures approximately 4km long and 1.2km wide, making it one of the largest glacial lakes in Nepal, in addition to its altitude.

The lake is fed predominantly by the glacier meltwater from Tilicho Peak or Annapurna IV, and interestingly enough, the lake does not have any visible inflow or outflow streams, meaning the waters of the lake remain in the lake basin. The lake also has important religious significance to Hinduism and Buddhism. It is referenced in the sacred Kak Bhusundi Lake from the Ramayana, as well as being the meditation site of the Buddhist saint Milarepa. The trek to Tilicho Lake, while rated difficult, is a demanding trek with some steep uphill sections, as well as high altitude, with basic accommodation up to the Tilicho Base Camp. It is commonly undertaken as a side trip of the Annapurna Circuit trek and offers fantastic views of the surrounding peaks of the Himalayas.

Gangapurna Lake

Gangapurna Lake is a glacial lake located in the Manang district of the Annapurna region of Nepal, at an elevation of roughly 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). The lake is filled with meltwater from the glaciers that flow down from Mt. Gangapurna (7,454 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Khangsar Kang, and Glacier Dome. Gangapurna Lake sits at the center of the Manang Valley, made up of steep terrain and deep gorges as well as alpine landscapes. The lake is seen as culturally and religiously significant to the locals, including Gurung communities and Manangi, many of whom consider it a holy lake that they visit for ritual purposes. The lake is replenished by the Gangapurna Glacier, which has been receding in response to climate change, having undergone important changes in depth and size. In addition to being of cultural and religious significance, the area surrounding the lake is of important natural significance in terms of the different plants and animals that exist in and around the lake.

Is This Trip the Right Fit For You?

The Tilicho Lake Trek is perfect for trekkers who are fit and have some experience with high-altitude trekking. You'll see lots of natural beauty and cultural experiences, and it will certainly be a rewarding experience if you're prepared for the trek and its potential challenges. The trek should not be attempted by inexperienced trekkers. The trek includes steep climbs, hiking on uneven and rocky trails, and reaching high altitudes of nearly 5,000 meters. Proper acclimatization is needed, and physical fitness is required. If you have never trekked before or have limited experience at high altitudes, we would recommend you to start treks in the lower Annapurna Region, like the Ghorepani Poonhill trek or the Mardi Himal trek, before attempting the Tilicho Lake trek.

When is The Best Time to Trek to Tilicho Lake?

The best time for the Tilicho Lake Trek is spring from March to May and the autumn season from September to November. These seasons offer the most stable weather conditions, clearest skies, and moderate temperatures, which are ideal for trekking in the high-altitude Annapurna region. During spring, the weather gets warmer after winter, rhododendron forests bloom, and the trails are generally dry and accessible. Autumn follows the monsoon, with clear mountain views and stable weather, and is a favourite among trekkers.

Summer, from June to August, is not recommended due to heavy monsoon rains, muddy trails, and the risk of landslides. And, winter from December to February is freezing cold with snow and possible trail closures.

How to Prepare Yourself For the Tilicho Lake Trek?

To prepare for the Tilicho Lake Trek, start by doing regular hikes on hilly terrain with a backpack to build stamina and get used to long hours of walking. You can train your body by doing activities that include stair climbing and hiking, or walking uphill with some sort of weight. Before the trek, make sure to break in your trekking boots for at least a month so no blisters occur. Pack a light bag but remember to pack essentials, including a down jacket, gloves, trekking poles, a water purifier, etc. Learn to pack your backpack for weight distribution. Study the trail map and familiarize yourself with altitude sickness symptoms. Take with you the basic medicines you need, and practice with your gear before the start of the trek.

This town is known as the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit Trail and marks the beginning of the rugged mountain roads.

After lunch, we will continue our drive towards Chame. The road from Besisahar to Chame is rough, off-road, and quite narrow, with winding mountain paths. This part of the journey takes around 3 to 4 hours and offers scenic views of waterfalls, cliffs, and high hills. We’ll reach Chame by late afternoon, check into our lodge, and take some time to rest and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

Transportation Details

The Tilicho Lake Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to the Annapurna Region, typically to Chame or Manang, depending on road conditions. All airport transfers and necessary drives in Kathmandu, and to the trek's starting point will be arranged in private transportation.

You can leave any excess luggage in storage at your hotel in Kathmandu prior to starting the trek. Your return from Tilicho Lake will generally be to Besisahar via jeep from either Manang or Khangsar, depending on your itinerary and trail conditions at your time of trekking.

Permits & Entrance Fees

To trek to Tilicho Lake, trekkers are required to obtain two permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.
  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card: NPR 2,000 for foreigners and NPR 600 for SAARC nationals.

Both of these permits are mandatory, and we can arrange them for you before your trek begins. It’s also recommended to carry a few photocopies of your passport and permits, as there are several checkpoints along the route where you’ll be asked to show them.

Internet Electricity & Phone Access

  • Mobile network coverage is generally available up to Manang, with both NTC and Ncell working, but beyond that, only Nepal Telecom (NTC) works, and the signal can be very unreliable. However, 4G does not work at higher elevations.
  • Internet access is available in many teahouses up to Manang, and occasionally beyond, depending on weather and location. Wi-Fi is often slow and unreliable, and using it usually costs around NPR 200–300.
  • Charging electronic devices such as phones and cameras is possible at lodges, but it usually incurs a small fee of NPR 300–500 per hour, and electricity is primarily generated through solar power.

Meals and Dining on the Tilicho Lake Trek

  • During the trek, we will provide all three meals as part of the package. Breakfast and dinner are served at the lodges, while lunch is prepared fresh along the trail at local guesthouses or restaurants during your hike.
  • The standard food options during the Tilicho Lake trek include pasta, noodles, soups, fried rice, vegetables, bread, eggs, pancakes, omelets, and seasonal fruit, which we provide as a complimentary item. The most common and filling meal is Dal Bhat, which comes with free refills to provide plenty of energy for the trek.
  • Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available, along with seasonal fruits. If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs.

Drinking Water on Tilicho Lake Trek

  • In lower elevations, you will be able to find bottled water for NPR 50 per liter, and it will be available for NPR 100 at elevations above Manang.
  • Lodges will provide boiled water for around NPR 500 per liter. However, it is important to note that when you reach high altitudes, bottled water becomes limited and less affordable, so we recommend that you bring along water purification tablets or rely on boiled water at lodges.

Group Leader and Crew

  • You’ll be accompanied throughout the trek by experienced, licensed mountain guides from our team, trained in wilderness skills and first aid.
  • For groups of more than 5 people, we provide an additional assistant guide to ensure extra care and support.
  • To make your journey easier, we usually assign one porter (Sherpa) for every two trekkers to help carry your gear.

Trekking Equipment

  • It's not necessary to spend a lot of money on extra equipment and clothing before your trip. The majority of these gears can be bought at reasonable prices in Kathmandu.
  • We provide a detailed packing list to ensure you have everything you need for the Tilicho Lake Trek, including essential gear for various weather conditions. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about what to pack for the Tilicho Lake Trek.

High Altitude Sickness

  • Since this trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,919 meters at Tilicho Lake, the risk of altitude sickness is significantly higher compared to other treks. Proper acclimatization and careful preparation are essential for a safe journey.
  • Our itinerary is designed with gradual elevation gains where possible, but trekkers should be aware that the high altitude demands both physical and mental readiness. This allows your body to adjust more naturally while you enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
  • It is crucial to understand altitude sickness and take preventive measures seriously. At such elevations, reduced oxygen levels can lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, or fatigue. These symptoms can escalate if not managed properly.
  • The best way to stay safe is to monitor your condition closely, communicate openly with your guide, rest when needed, and descend immediately if symptoms worsen. Following these precautions helps ensure that your Tilicho Lake Trek is both safe and memorable.

Weather and Climate

The weather at Tilicho Lake is highly unpredictable and can change quickly, sometimes even within the same day. Temperatures can drop sharply at higher altitudes, and sudden snowfall or strong winds are quite common. A morning that starts clear and sunny can turn cloudy or foggy by the afternoon. Because of these rapid changes, it’s important for trekkers to carry warm, layered clothing such as insulated jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and hats. Waterproof gear is also essential to stay dry during unexpected rain or snow.

Trekking Grade

This Tilicho Lake trek is described as moderate to difficult, with hikes lasting between 5-7 hours daily. Prior trekking experience is useful, but not essential. Being at least moderately fit and having a good mindset is more helpful, as there are some steep ascents, narrow trails, and rocky terrain along the way, particularly between Shree Kharka and Tilicho base camp.

Tipping on the Tilicho Lake trek is not mandatory, but it is an important way to acknowledge the hard work of your guide and porter, as it forms a significant part of their income. Generally, we recommend tipping 10–12% of the trek package price for your porter and 12–15% for your guide. You can adjust the amount according to the quality of service and your overall experience.
