Mardi Himal Trek is a hidden gem that not many people know of. It gives you a close-up view of the Annapurna Himalayan range, beautiful scenery, and the chance to trek to one of the higher elevations in the Annapurna Region. It is located in the northwestern region of Nepal, close to the Annapurna massif, and provides a spectacular view of the Annapurna Himalayan range, including Machapuchhre. Mardi Himal is the southwest ridge of Mount Machhapuchre, also known as Mount Fishtail. Travelers find the Mardi Himal trek itinerary extremely convenient, as this journey allows you to experience all the joy and thrill of witnessing the magnificent Himalayan peaks of this region up close.

The Mardi Himal trekking route is conveniently located near Pokhara, making it a photography-friendly destination that offers stunning sunsets and sunrises. First climbed in 1961 from its east ridge, this mountain gained prominence in 1953. Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna I, Mt. Annapurna II, Mt. Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Annapurna South, Mt. Hiunchuli, Mt. Machhapuchhre, and more can be seen from the Mardi Himal trekking expedition. Mardi Himal is one of the most popular viewpoints in Nepal. Mardi Himal trekking begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. After reaching Pokhara, you'll travel via Kande (1,750m), Pitam Deurali (2,100m), Forest Camp (2,600m), Mardi View point (4,200m), and Mardi Himal Base Camp at an elevation of 4,500 meters before returning to Mardi High Camp. The Mardi Himal Trek Package includes a Pokhara Tour, followed by a return to Kathmandu.

Annapurna treks include Ghorepani Poonhill, Annapurna Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, and the Mardi Himal Yoga Trek. Mardi Himal trekking offers more than mountain adventure. You'll journey through a village where Gurung, Thakali, and other ethnic groups offer guesthouses and homestays. Stone-roofed homes, landscaped farm fields, vegetation, and animals are all worth seeing. For the complete guidebook for the Mardi Himal Trek, click here.

Major Highlights of Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Viewpoint

Mardi Upper Viewpoint is the best part of this short and typical Mardi Himal trek since it offers panoramic views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna Himal range. The northern side offers stunning mountain vistas, while the east and west offer harsh terrain and high hills. The southern side offers views of Pokhara city and its lakes. Sunrise and sunset are intriguing because you can see the sun's golden splendor. Mardi Himal offers breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchhre, Nilgiri, and more.

Pokhara City

Pokhara, in western Nepal, is a major tourist city in the Annapurna Himalayas. It's a great place to view mountains, lakes, and other natural treasures. Annapurna Base Camp, Poonhill, Ghorepani, and Mardi Himal begin at Pokhara. Pokhara is also the starting point for most tourism, trekking, and adventure activities in Nepal, including boating, rafting, Annapurna trekking, paragliding, bungee jumping, ziplining, canyoning, and skydiving in Annapurna.

Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal walk is possible throughout the year, although September, October, and November are the best months to go. These three different months come in Nepal's post-monsoon autumn season, which offers a beautiful blue sky, breathtaking mountain vistas, and lush landscapes. You still have the spring season if you can't complete your adventure in these three months (March, April, and May). Autumn and spring are the best seasons for the Mardi Himal Trek, as you can see the Annapurnas, the scenery is green, and there are rhododendron flowers everywhere.

Fitness for the Mardi Himal Trek

A good training schedule before your journey will make it much more pleasurable. The Mardi Himal Trek is comparable to other hikes in the Annapurna region. It doesn't require any climbing expertise. We have seen people of all ages, including the young, overweight, and underweight, complete this trek, and they all express great appreciation for it being a moderate-grade trek that does not require technical gear like ropes, oxygen cylinders, crampons, or walking poles.

The Difficulty of the Mardi Himal Trek

You will only be walking through a jungle for one or two days on the Mardi Himal Journey, so it is an easy trek. You might come across a wild yak, a leopard, or other animals. Be cautious of the avalanche once you arrive at the Mardi Himal base camp. The difficulty of the Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate one.

Permits and Entrance Fees for Mardi Himal Trek

For Mardi Himal Trek, trekkers are required to obtain two permits

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.
  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card: NPR 2,000 for foreigners and NPR 600 for SAARC nationals.
Both of these permits are mandatory, and we can arrange them for you before your trek begins. It’s also recommended to carry a few photocopies of your passport and permits, as there are several checkpoints along the route where you’ll be asked to show them.

Internet, Electricity & Phone Access on Mardi Himal Trek

  • Mobile network coverage is generally available up to Pitam Deurali and Rest Camp, though the signal may be weak in some areas. Beyond Low Camp and Mardi High Camp, coverage is very limited, and only Nepal Telecom (NTC) may work intermittently. 4G does not function at higher elevations.
  • Internet access is available at some lodges up to Low Camp, but it is often slow and may not work during bad weather. Using Wi-Fi usually costs around NPR 200–300 per session. Beyond Low Camp, internet access is rare.
  • Charging electronic devices such as phones and cameras is possible at most lodges along the route, but it usually incurs a small fee of NPR 300 per hour or NPR 500 for a full charge. Electricity is primarily solar-powered, so charging times can be slower, especially during cloudy or rainy days. It is recommended to carry a power bank for high-altitude days.

Meals and Dining on the Mardi Himal Trek

  • During the trek, all three meals are included as part of the package. Breakfast and dinner are served at the lodges, while lunch is prepared fresh along the trail at local guesthouses or restaurants. There are plenty of teahouses along the way, so you don’t need to worry about going hungry while trekking.
  • The standard food options during the Mardi Himal Trek include pasta, noodles, soups, fried rice, vegetables, bread, eggs, pancakes, omelets, and seasonal fruit, which we provide as a complimentary item. The most common and filling meal is Dal Bhat, which comes with free refills to provide plenty of energy for the trek.
  • Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available, along with seasonal fruits. If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs.

Drinking Water on Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek

  • In lower elevations, you will be able to find bottled water for NPR 50 per liter, and it will be available for NPR 100 at elevations above Low Camp.
  • Lodges will provide boiled water for around NPR 500 - 800 for a big pot. However, it is important to note that when you reach high altitudes, bottled water becomes limited and less affordable, so we recommend that you bring along water purification tablets or rely on boiled water at lodges.

Group Leader and Crew

  • You’ll be accompanied throughout the trek by experienced, licensed mountain guides from our team, trained in wilderness skills and first aid. Hiring a guide is mandatory while trekking in Nepal, as required by law.
  • For groups of more than 5 people, we provide an additional assistant guide to ensure extra care and support. To make your journey easier, we usually assign one porter (Sherpa) for every two trekkers to help carry your gear.

Trekking Equipment for Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek

  • It's not necessary to spend a lot of money on extra equipment and clothing before your trip. The majority of these gears can be bought at reasonable prices in Kathmandu. Essentials include layered clothing, waterproof boots, camp shoes, gloves, sun hat, backpack with rain cover, trekking poles, headlamp, sleeping bag, sun protection, and water purification. A basic medical kit will be carried by our guide for your safety.
  • We provide a detailed packing list to ensure you have everything you need for the Mardi Himal Trek, including essential gear for various weather conditions. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about what to pack for the Mardi Himal Trek.

High Altitude Sickness

  • Since the Mardi Himal Trek reaches a maximum altitude of around 4,500 m at Mardi Base Camp, the risk of altitude sickness is moderate to high. Proper acclimatization and preparation are essential for a safe trek.
  • Our itinerary is planned with gradual elevation gains where possible, but trekkers should be aware that higher-altitude sections, especially above 3,500 m, require both physical and mental readiness. Reduced oxygen levels can cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, or fatigue, which may worsen if not managed properly.
  • To stay safe, monitor your condition closely, rest when needed, and communicate any symptoms to your guide. Descending to a lower altitude is recommended if symptoms worsen. Some trekkers may use Diamox (acetazolamide) under medical supervision to help prevent or reduce altitude sickness.

Travel Insurance for Mardi Himal Trek

For your Mardi Himal Trek, we strongly advise securing comprehensive travel insurance. This coverage must include emergency high-altitude rescue, evacuation, and medical expenses. For guidance on selecting the most suitable coverage, please refer to our guide “Travel Insurance Required for Trekking in Nepal.”

Trekking Grade

The Mardi Himal Trek is generally rated as moderate, suitable for individuals with a reasonable level of physical fitness and some prior hiking or trekking experience. The trek reaches a maximum altitude of around 4,500 m at Mardi Base Camp, with daily hikes of 4 to 7 hours. Trails include gradual ascents and descents, uneven paths, and occasional rough, muddy or steep sections.

Weather and Climate

The weather in Nepal is highly unpredictable and can change rapidly, sometimes within a single day. Trekkers trekking the Mardi Himal should be prepared for significant temperature drops at higher altitudes, as sudden snowfall, strong winds, and shifting clouds or fog are common. Layered, warm clothing including insulated jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and hat is essential, along with waterproof gear to stay dry during unexpected rain or snow.

Tipping

While tipping in Nepal is not mandatory, it is an important way to acknowledge the hard work of your guide and porter, as it forms a significant part of their income. Generally, we recommend tipping 10–12% of the trek package price for your porter and 12–15% for your guide. You can adjust the amount according to the quality of service and your overall experience. Providing tips in Nepalese Rupees or a widely accepted currency like USD is recommended.

The Mardi Himal trek path normally starts from Kande, which is 1275 meters above sea level, and within a few days, the trip brings you directly up to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint. The highest point you may reach is Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters, but it is unsafe when there is ice or snow, so the majority of trekkers climb to Mardi Himal Viewpoint, which is at 4250 meters.

Autumn and spring are the best seasons for Mardi Himal trekking since they provide spectacular views of the Annapurna Himalaya, lush scenery, and rhododendron flowers everywhere.

Yes, you can take your family and children on a journey to Mardi Himal. It is a simple journey; you will have a cozy hotel, hot food, a shower, Wi-Fi, and a helpful local guide, so what more could you ask for? You can certainly hike to Mardi Himal with your kids. It is lovely to introduce students or young children to the different wildernesses in this area, including the snow-covered mountains, flowers, streams, wild creatures, scenery, gorges, etc. In addition to trekking and strolling, we believe the Mardi Himal hike will serve as a research location for children and students.

You can do the trial yourself because it's simple, but occasionally things can go wrong. For your protection, you should travel in a group or have a guide or porter with you because you might come across some wild yaks and leopards. Secondly, you should hike between September and November or between March and May. There will be fewer people on the paths during monsoon or winter treks, and there is a higher risk of landslides, avalanches, etc. The Mardi Himal base camp is the most dangerous part of this trek, so you must take extra precautions.

Due to the fact that the Mardi Himal trek is a recently opened trail that passes through a lush forest and wilderness and that no clothing or equipment can be purchased there, you should be well-prepared from Kathmandu or Pokhara. You don't need the right equipment for this walk, though. You may complete this journey with ease if you have a pair of T-shirts, trekking shoes (regular shoes will do), a sun hat or cap, sunglasses, trekking paint, a pair of socks, a headlamp, normal gloves, a down jacket, sunscreen cream, general medication, a water bottle, sandals, novels, etc.

Although the Mardi Himal Trek is not a very chilly route, it will be chilly if you go in December or January. You will experience temperatures between -8 and -10, although other months will be warm. Typically, the temperature rises to 20 degrees centigrade during the day and falls to -4 to -5 degrees centigrade at night.

The base of the Mardi Himal hike now has a tea house. There was camp base trekking prior to 2012, but now there are numerous tea houses and lodges in every town. You don't need to bring a tent for the Mardi Himal hike, but you can set up your tent close to the tea house and eat there if that's how you like to sleep. It is much warmer to remain in the lodge rather than in a tent.

Mardi Himal is not a particularly high-altitude trek. The best advice for preventing high altitude sickness is to avoid spending the night at an elevation that is more than 3500 meters above where you spent the previous night. For further safety, it is always preferable to have one acclimatization day after climbing every 1000 meters.

You will only be walking through a jungle for one or two days on the Mardi Himal Journey, so it is an easy trek. You might come across a wild yak, a leopard, or other animals. Once you arrive at the Mardi Himal base camp, be cautious of the avalanche.
